CANYON, Texas (May 6, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian's sprinters and distance runners will make a final push for NCAA Division II national qualifying times in the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will begin in earnest on Friday at West Texas A&M.
Sophomore sprinter
Bryah Davis of Cedar Hill, Texas, has the Eagles' only Division II provisional time of the season so far, an 11.90-second clocking in the 100 meters that ranks 35th nationally. She ranks seventh in the LSC in the event, and her teammate, senior
Lawanda Harvey of Frisco, Texas, is ranked 12th at 12.18 seconds and could also be a threat to score team points.
Harvey, who qualified for the Division II Outdoor Championships in the 200 meters as a freshman, will try to hit this season's provisional time of 24.40 seconds in the LSC meet. She enters ranked sixth in the league in the event at 24.85 seconds.
Davis, Harvey, freshman
Atlanta Hopgood of Oklahoma City and senior
Destiny Johnson of Arlington, Texas, comprise OC's 4x100-meter relay team and will look to lower their school-record time of 47.67 seconds.
Senior distance runner
Kelsey Castillo of Edmond, Okla., opted to return to OC for her final season of eligibility in outdoor track and that decision has paid off, as she ranks in the top five in the LSC in three events. She's fourth in the 800 meters (2:16.73), fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:38.39) and fourth in the 5,000 meters (17:43.15). It's likely she'll focus on the first two events at the league meet.
Also a threat to score points in the 800 meters will be junior
Payton Duesing of Lantana, Texas, who was a third-team All-LSC selection during the indoor track season.
Kenya Bailey, a junior from Ponca City, Okla., was an All-LSC second-team pick and figures to be a threat in either the 5,000 meters, in which she's ranked fifth at 17:49.85, or the 10,000 meters, in which she's ranked third at 37:20.01.
In field events, OC's highest-ranked competitor is junior
Morgan Ray of Edmond, Okla., who's 11th in the triple jump (35 feet, 6½ inches) and 12th in the long jump (17 feet). Thrower
Taelor Brown, a sophomore from Pawnee, Okla., is 13th in the shot put (39 feet, 6½ inches) and 14th in the hammer (137 feet) while
Nikkita Addy, a freshman from Moore, Okla., is 13th in the discus (128 feet, 11 inches).
OC will be one of 12 teams competing in the meet, joining Angelo State (Texas), Cameron, Dallas Baptist (Texas), Eastern New Mexico, Lubbock Christian (Texas), Midwestern State (Texas), St. Edward's (Texas), Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Tyler and West Texas A&M.
Action will begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m. at West Texas A&M's Track and Field Complex.
