OC Ultimate posts another 4-0 day, this time in Just Plain Nasty event

NORMAN, Okla. (Oct. 2, 2021) – For the second straight tournament, Oklahoma Christian's Ultimate club team posted a 4-0 record on the opening day, this time on Saturday in the Just Plain Nasty event played on the University of Oklahoma Intramural Fields.

OC beat Sul Ross State (Texas) 13-9, Air Force Afterburn 13-9, Texas State 13-4 and Tulsa 13-6 and no doubt will have a high seed in bracket play, which will begin about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The Eagles also went 4-0 on the opening day of the Rookie Ride tournament in Tulsa two weeks ago and eventually finished as the runner-up.

"Whew," OC coach Garrett Taylor said. "That was a long day. Elliott Moore made a ton of great throws today and we got great play from Kevin van Roosmalen and T.J. Lee today as well. We're looking forward bracket play tomorrow."

In the opener against what Taylor called a "highly competitive" Sul Ross State team, the Eagles initially had trouble dealing with Sul Ross' deep hucks, "but eventually our legs and depth prevailed, along with sticking to our fundamentals."

Against the Air Force Afterburn, a team in the same Division III region as OC, the Eagles jumped to a 3-0 lead, led 7-3 at halftime and cruised the rest of the way.

Kyle Henke led OC against Texas State. OC led 7-2 at halftime by forcing the Bobcats' handlers into uncomfortable situations. In the second half, Henke pulled the disc deep into the Texas State end zone and eventually scored a Callahan goal – the Ultimate equivalent of a safety in football – by catching a disc thrown by a Texas State player. Jonathan Costello added a great diving grab during the game as well.

OC's final game, against Tulsa, came after Tulsa lost 13-0 to Air Force. Taylor played many of the Eagles' younger players to allow them to gain experience – "a great finish to a great day."
