Ray sets OC long jump record at season-ending Oxy Invitational

Freshman Morgan Ray smiles after breaking the OC long jump record on Saturday at the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES (May 11, 2019) – Not long after Morgan Ray signed with Oklahoma Christian, OC track and field coach Wade Miller said he thought she'd someday be a threat to break the program's longstanding record in the long jump.

It took Ray all of one season to fulfill that promise. At the Oxy Invitational on Saturday at Bill Henry Track, the freshman from Edmond snapped the 25-year-old mark with a leap of 18 feet, 2½ inches (5.55 meters). The jump earned her a 13th-place finish in the 28-woman field.

Stephanie Horne set the previous OC record of 17 feet, 11 inches in 1994, which was the program's fourth-longest-standing outdoor mark. Horne still holds the OC triple jump record of 37 feet, 4½ inches, set the same year.

Veteran thrower Maia Zeno, a senior from Heath, Texas, earned the Eagles' only team points of the meet, placing third among 13 women in the hammer with a mark of 161 feet, 2 inches (49.12 meters). Another senior, Alexus Woolly of Ardmore, was 14th among 20 in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 10 inches (39.28 meters).

Senior sprinter Leisa VanVooren posted her second personal-best 400-meter time in as many races, finishing in 56.59 seconds in her final career race for OC.

OC finished tied for 28th in the team standings with six points in the meet at Occidental (Calif.), which has served as the program's season-ending event the last three seasons.
