ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (April 25, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian Athletic Hall of Famer Steve Guymon will leave his longtime coaching home, Harding (Ark.), to move to another Great American Conference school, Ouachita Baptist (Ark.).
Ouachita Baptist announced Wednesday that Guymon has been hired as its head coach for women's cross country and director of competitive club sports. Guymon's son, Austin, is a football player at Ouachita Baptist.
"Coach Guymon's experience, knowledge and skills will serve our athletic program well," said Ouachita Baptist's athletic director, David Sharp. "His coaching record speaks for itself, and his connections in the sports of cross country and track will have an immediate impact on our program. I am excited for our student-athletes and look forward to seeing our program grow."
Guymon has worked at Harding, a sister school to OC, since the 2002-03 school year, serving as the Bisons' men's and women's track and field and cross country coach. He has earned 25 conference coach-of-the-year honors (12 men's, 13 women's) in the Gulf South and Great American Conferences. His teams have won 25 titles (12 men's, 13 women's) after the Bisons won the GAC women's outdoor championship last week.
"I'm most excited about leaving one great program at a really good, Christian organization and going into another one," Guymon said. "God amuses me at times how He works things out. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work at both places, and I'm looking forward to seeing what He has in store for me at Ouachita.
"I have nothing but good feelings for Harding and feel blessed to have coached such great athletes and great people. I am looking forward to the new challenge and getting a chance to spend more time with Austin."
Guymon is an active member of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association. He was the organization's NCAA Division II vice president from 2007-10 and president from 2011-13. He has served on the USTFCCCA's Hall of Fame Committee, Meet Enhancement Committee and NCAA Connection Committee since 2014.
Originally from Memphis, Tenn., Guymon earned NAIA All-America honors in track and cross country for Oklahoma Christian five times from 1982 to 1984.
Running for longtime OC track and cross country coach Randy Heath, Guymon finished 10th at the NAIA cross country meet in 1982, was a member of OC distance medley relay teams that won national titles in 1983 and 1984 and placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the 1983 and 1984 NAIA meets. He once held the OC outdoor school record in the 6,400-meter relay at 17:11.24.
He was inducted into the OC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
