PITTSBURG, Kan. (Jan. 18, 2019) –
Lawanda Harvey posted a runner-up finish in the 60 meters and five other Oklahoma Christian athletes posted top five finishes on Friday in the Rumble in the Jungle, an indoor track and field meet hosted by Pittsburg State (Kan.) at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
Harvey, a junior from Frisco, Texas, placed second among 28 runners in the sprint event with a time of 7.81 seconds. OC freshman
Aysha Robinson also ran well in the 60, finishing eighth in 7.97 seconds.
Coming off a strong cross country season, OC junior
Kelsey Castillo of Edmond ran well in the mile, placing fifth in a 19-woman field in 5:17.99, just 1.01 seconds off her career best. In the 400 meters, senior
Leisa VanVooren of Bedford, Texas, placed fourth among 11 runners in 58.50 seconds.
Michaiah Chock, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., and Castillo both had top-10 finishes in a 20-woman field in the 800 meters. Chock placed fifth in 2:24.23 – just .01 of a second off her career best – while Castillo was eighth in 2:25.80.
Freshman
Kenya Bailey of Ponca City, in her second collegiate track meet, was seventh among 26 runners in the 3,000 meters in 11:00.31.
The Lady Eagles also had two high finishers in field events, as junior
Destiny Grace of Rockwall, Texas, was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 10½ inches (12.46 meters) and senior
Maia Zeno of Heath, Texas, was fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 48 feet, ¾ inch (14.65 meters).
OC finished sixth among the eight NCAA Division II teams in the meet with 42 points. Host Pittsburg State edged out Oklahoma Baptist 160-159 for the team title.
OC will compete next on Jan. 26 in the Central Oklahoma Invitational at the University of Oklahoma's Mosier Indoor Track and Field Facility in Norman.
