Box Score GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Feb. 4, 2018) – For the second straight day in the AirHogs Classic, Oklahoma Christian let a late lead slip away on Sunday, this time against No. 20-ranked Angelo State (Texas).
OC took leads of 5-0 and 8-4, but Angelo State scored seven runs in its final two at-bats to escape AirHogs Stadium with an 11-8 win. The loss for OC (1-3) came a day after Washburn (Kan.) scored four ninth-inning runs to deal the Eagles another tough defeat.
Chad Kennedy continued his hot start to the baseball season, hitting a three-run home run in the fifth inning to stake the Eagles to the 5-0 lead. But just when it looked like OC might cruise, the Rams rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Urquidi had the big blow in the inning for Angelo State (4-0), a two-run single to right field.
A three-run seventh, keyed by a two-run single up the middle by
Kolton Brown, rebuilt OC's lead to four runs, but the Eagles imploded defensively in the bottom of the inning, committing four errors that led to five Angelo State runs. The Rams had five hits in the inning off OC reliever
Garett Hill (0-1), but only one that brought home a run – a ground-rule double by Urquidi.
The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Kellen Rholl (0-1), the fifth of Angelo State's six pitchers, picked up the win.
Hunter Markwardt went 3-for-3 for OC and scored three runs and
Callen Crockett added a pair of hits for the Eagles. Kennedy finished the four-day event hitting .500 (9 for 18) with eight RBIs and two homers.
OC will play Oklahoma Baptist in a three-game series that will start with a single game Friday at Dobson Field before shifting to Shawnee for a doubleheader on Saturday.
