Young, Squier provide heroics in 12-inning win at St. Edward’s

Freshman center fielder Caitlin Young made a huge defensive play in the 11th inning of OC's win at St. Edward's.
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas (April 13, 2017) – Just when it looked like St. Edward's (Texas) would break an extra-inning scoreless tie, Oklahoma Christian center fielder Caitlin Young made the biggest defensive play of her career. Then Haley Squier followed with perhaps her most important career RBI.

Young threw out a St. Edward's runner at home plate to complete a double play in the 11th inning, and Squier's sacrifice fly scored Lacey Davidson in the top of the 12th, lifting OC to a dramatic 1-0 win over the Hilltoppers on Thursday at Diane Daniels Field.

The win gave OC (28-18, 10-5 Heartland Conference) a crucial league series win and moved the Lady Eagles into a second-place tie in the conference standings with St. Edward's (18-26, 10-5), one game behind  No. 14-ranked St. Mary's (Texas). OC will host St. Mary's (34-10, 11-4) in a three-game series next Friday and Saturday.

All three teams, along with Texas A&M International and Lubbock Christian (Texas), are vying to win the regular-season crown and earn the right to host the Heartland postseason tournament.

The 12-inning showdown on Thursday matched the longest game in OC history, a 1-0 win over Houston Baptist (Texas) in the 2003 NAIA tournament. It was one inning shy of tying for the longest in Heartland history, as only six games ever involving a league team have lasted 13 innings.

The series win over St. Edward's was OC's first in Austin over the Hilltoppers since the Lady Eagles began Heartland competition with the 2013 season.

In a 1-0 game, there's bound to be plenty of good pitching and that was the case on both sides Thursday. OC starter Madison Nordyke allowed two hits in three shutout innings before giving way to Madison Hagood (13-9), who went a career-long nine innings and allowed only six hits. Neither OC pitcher recorded a strikeout, but they also didn't walk anyone, either. Hagood lowered her league-leading ERA to 1.46.

For St. Edward's, Olivia Burdick struck out six and walked four in 9 1/3 innings before giving way to the Hilltoppers' ace, Lauren Slatten (9-9). Both teams stranded 11 baserunners and managed only one extra-base hit between them, a double by OC's Sheridan Bond in the third inning.

The Hilltoppers looked set to win in the 11th. Consecutive errors to start the inning gave St. Edward's two baserunners and a groundout moved one of those runners, Kayla Appleby, to third. Melina Sanchez then flew out to center field and Appleby tried to tag up, but Young's throw reached OC catcher Niki Davidson in time to apply the tag, ending the inning.

In the top of the 12th, Lacey Davidson led off and struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch by Slatten. Kaylie Upton reached on a fielder's choice, as the Hilltoppers tried and failed to retire Lacey Davidson on Upton's sacrifice bunt. Young followed with another sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third, and Bond walked to load the bases.

Squier then hit a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to allow Lacey Davidson to score, breaking the scoreless tie.

Brittney Bryson and Jinny Stricklin both singled with one out in the bottom of the 12th, but Hagood got leadoff batter Alex Mayfield to hit a fielder's-choice grounder and Breah Whitten grounded out to second base to end the game.
