Box Score LAREDO, Texas (March 25, 2017) – Texas A&M International managed only three hits against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately for OC, two of them came in one inning, along with three runs.
The Dustdevils then held off an OC rally in the seventh inning to post a 3-1 win over the Lady Eagles and take the Heartland Conference softball series two games to one.
OC (21-14, 4-2 Heartland) dropped into a tie for third place with TAMIU (10-18, 4-2) in the league standings, one game behind St. Mary's (Texas) and St. Edward's (Texas).
The Lady Eagles had seven hits but stranded eight baserunners. Their only run came in the second inning, when
Bridget White hit a leadoff single to left field and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kayla Eichler.
Texas A&M International managed only one hit off OC left-hander
Madison Hagood (9-7) until the sixth inning. Cassie Cannon was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Brenda Parnin reached on an error. Robi Kami reached on a fielder's choice grounder which scored Cannon to tie the game. A bunt single by Alyssa Acuna scored Parnin to put TAMIU ahead and Sara Caterson's RBI single to left field made it 3-1.
OC loaded the bases in the seventh. Eichler hit a leadoff single and with two outs,
Sheridan Bond reached on an error and
Madison Nordyke singled. But TAMIU pitcher Delainy Thompson (6-9) wrapped up a complete-game performance by retiring the Lady Eagles' top hitter,
Haley Squier, on a ground ball.
OC will return home for a nonconference doubleheader against Midwestern State (Texas) on Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m., then will visit Newman (Kan.) next Friday and Saturday for another conference series.
