Box Score 2 SAN ANGELO, Texas (March 16, 2017) – Even in defeat, Oklahoma Christian made a statement on Thursday at No. 2 Angelo State (Texas).
OC had its 11-game winning streak ended with a 2-0 loss in the opener, then fell 3-0 in the second game of the softball doubleheader at Mayer Field as the Rambelles extended their winning streak to 24 games.
But OC (19-11) played Angelo State (28-1) much closer than the two teams picked atop the Heartland Conference's preseason poll. Angelo State outscored St. Mary's (Texas) 15-1 in a doubleheader last week and outscored Lubbock Christian (Texas) 17-1 and 13-2 in a pair of doubleheaders this month.
In the opener, OC pitchers
Kaylie Upton (5-1) and
Madison Nordyke combined on a two-hitter. Unfortunately, one of those hits was a two-run home run by Alexis Evans in the fourth inning.
Upton went 3-for-3 as a batter, accounting for half of OC's six hits, but the Lady Eagles didn't advance a runner past second base against Angelo State pitchers Brandy Marlett (14-1) or Morgan Hill, who picked up her second save of the season.
The 2-0 margin was the Rambelles' second-closest home win of the season. They entered the game hitting .358 as a team and averaging 8.18 runs per game.
OC threw left-hander
Madison Hagood (9-5) in the second game and she went the distance, allowing six hits. Angelo State scored twice in the third inning, on a walk, a triple by Madison Greenwell and a run-scoring groundout by Bailey Wallace. The Rambelles made it 3-0 in the sixth as Taegan Kirk doubled and scored.
Angelo State's Kenedy Urbany (10-0) pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a sixth-inning to center field by
Niki Davidson. The Rambelles entered the doubleheader with a team ERA of just 1.71.
OC will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Texas Woman's in a nonconference doubleheader that will start at 5 p.m. at
Tom Heath Field.
