Davidson, Lady Eagles walk off with split against Cameron

OC senior Niki Davidson's game-winning home run gave the Lady Eagles a doubleheader split vs. Cameron.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 28, 2017) – While in the Oklahoma Christian dugout before the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday, near the end of a doubleheader against Cameron, OC softball coach Tom Heath thought Niki Davidson could end the game with one swing.

Sure enough, the senior catcher from Moore did just that, launching a pitch from Alyssa Osterdock over the left-field fence at Tom Heath Field to give the Lady Eagles a dramatic 3-2 win and a doubleheader split against a strong Cameron squad.

Cameron won an equally tight decision in the opener, taking advantage of OC's defensive miscues to edge the Lady Eagles 4-3.

"I thought, 'It would be wonderful if Niki could get a hold of one right now,' and she did," Heath said. "That's the thing – you can't count Niki out. She's in that four-hole for a reason. They pitched around her for the most part all day long. When they pitched to her, she got one she could handle and won the ball game with it."

Cameron (16-5) managed only four hits against three OC pitchers in the second game, but one of them was a two-run home run by Brenna Busby in the second inning off OC starter Madison Nordyke, which followed a leadoff single by Breezy McCombs.

OC (9-9) scratched out two runs in the late innings thanks to two critical errors by the Aggies. In the fifth, Sheridan Bond singled to right field and went all the way to third base when Cameron third baseman Annie Combs misplayed a sacrifice bunt by Nordyke. Haley Squier's sacrifice fly scored Bond.

With one out in the seventh, Bond singled to left field and scooted to third base after the ball slipped under McCombs' glove in left field. Nordyke's groundout to second base was enough to score Bond and tie the game, forcing extra innings.

Kaylie Upton relieved Nordyke in the circle for OC to start the fifth and held the Aggies without a hit until a one-out bloop double by Bethany Hines in the eighth.

Madison Hagood (4-4) then replaced Upton, and although the Aggies loaded the bases with a walk and a fielder's choice ground ball, Hagood escaped unscathed when OC right fielder Kayla Eichler speared a sinking line drive by Callie Busby before Brenna Busby popped up.

Davidson led off the eighth and her homer ended an otherwise strong performance by Osterdock (5-3), who allowed OC only five hits.

"Our defense was really outstanding in the second game," Heath said. "It was a team effort when it came to the pitching staff and all of them contributed."

In the first game, OC took a quick 2-0 lead in the first, after Hagood struck out the side on just 10 pitches in the top of the inning. But two errors by the Lady Eagles led to two Cameron runs in the third.

OC went back ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Bridget White, but a triple by Abbey Warren off Hagood and another error resulted in two more runs for the Aggies in the fourth.

Hines (11-2) allowed only two OC baserunners to reach second base in the final four innings. Hagood took the pitching loss despite allowing only five hits against seven strikeouts.

"The defense struggled," Heath said. "I don't know what it is, but some days, that happens, and it seems like when it happens, it's contagious. Madison pitched well enough to win. The thing that I liked – and we talked about this between games – we had to have a short memory. We had to forget that one and come out and play a good game, and we did."

OC will return to action on Friday, hosting Fort Hays State (Kan.) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
