Helterbrand scores as OC ties Lubbock Christian

OC freshman Cole Helterbrand scored his first collegiate goal against Lubbock Christian.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 7, 2017) – On the bright side, Oklahoma Christian came away with a standings point on Saturday afternoon against Heartland Conference rival Lubbock Christian (Texas) – something that had happened only one time in seven previous meetings.

Still, the Eagles left Putnam City Stadium lamenting that it should have been more. Playing a man down, Lubbock Christian scored a game-tying goal in the final four minutes of regulation and limited OC's offensive chances thereafter during a 1-1 tie.

Freshman Cole Helterbrand scored the goal for OC (3-5-2, 1-4-2 Heartland), which moved the game across town due to unplayable field conditions on campus at the Eagle Soccer Field after a rainy two-week stretch. Putnam City Stadium has an artificial-turf playing surface.

Lubbock Christian (4-6-2, 3-3-2) was coming off an impressive 1-1 draw at No. 3-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) on Thursday night, but for much of Saturday's game, OC was the aggressor. The Eagles outshot LCU 19-13 but weren't able to convert multiple scoring chances.

"As soon as we went a goal up, we dropped our level and let them back in the game," OC coach David Scott said. "We dropped our level even though we were up a goal and up a man. They had more energy than we did and a little more belief, it looked like."

Helterbrand broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute, taking a pass from Garrett Blume and dribbling pass a defender before slotting a shot from six yards out into the lower left corner of the goal, past LCU goalkeeper Parker O'Quinn. Helterbrand nearly scored again in the 66th minute, when his shot hit the post and bounded away from the goal.

In the 68th minute, LCU defender Brandon Couling received a yellow card, then picked up a red card and was ejected less than 30 seconds later, giving OC a man advantage for the rest of the match. It appeared OC had gone ahead 2-0 in the 71st minute, but Clay Collier's header goal was disallowed, as the Eagles were called offside.

After that, it was the Chaparrals who generally were more aggressive and it paid off for them in the 87th minute. An OC foul gave LCU's Richie Vaca-Cordova a free kick from about 40 yards out and he beat OC goalkeeper Gianluca Marchetti to tie the game.

LCU outshot OC 5-4 in the two 10-minute overtime periods, and both Marchetti and O'Quinn had to make strong saves to keep their teams in the game. Marchetti finished with eight saves, while O'Quinn had six.

OC will host Texas-Permian Basin at Putnam City Stadium on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in a makeup game. The contest, originally scheduled for last Thursday, had to be postponed due to the unplayable conditions at OC.

"We've got to move on and fix things the next time out," Scott said.
