Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 19, 2017) – In a season full of frustrating outcomes, this one particularly stung for Oklahoma Christian.
OC controlled its game Thursday night against Dallas Baptist (Texas) for long stretches, outshot the Patriots 27-19 and picked up some strong play in the goal. But it was DBU celebrating after Brooks Friedman scored a golden goal with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give his team a 2-1 win at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (3-9-2, 1-8-2 Heartland Conference) dominated Dallas Baptist (7-7-1, 4-6-1) in the first half, rolling up a 17-4 edge in shots and keeping the Patriots from any good scoring chances.
Garrett Blume put the Eagles ahead in the 20th minute with a blast from 35 yards out in the middle of the field, his team-high fourth goal of the season.
But in the second half, Dallas Baptist picked up its intensity and pressed, forcing OC goalkeeper
Gary Goldsboro Jr. to make several strong saves to maintain the Eagles' lead.
The Patriots finally broke through in the 88th minute, when Friedman's cross found the head of teammate Michalin Dennie. Dennie's goal snapped a scoreless streak of more than 455 minutes for Dallas Baptist, which was playing without its leading scorer, Ethan Martinez.
OC had the better scoring chances in overtime, although DBU had a 6-4 shot advantage. Just when it seemed the game would end in a draw, however, a defensive error by the Eagles gave Dallas Baptist possession near midfield and Friedman eventually capitalized, sending a shot from the upper right corner of the penalty box past Goldsboro in the 110th minute.
Goldsboro, making his first start of the season, made seven saves, while DBU goalkeeper Tyler Hofmann had six saves.
The loss eliminated OC from contention for one of the six spots in the Heartland postseason tournament.
OC will host No. 16-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
