Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (March 1, 2016) –
Kelsie Finch hit a two-run home run and delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Oklahoma Christian a 5-4 win over Pittsburg State (Kan.) and a split of a doubleheader at
Tom Heath Field on Tuesday.
The Gorillas beat OC 6-4 in the opener, as the Lady Eagles stranded 11 runners on base. But OC (8-11) twice came from behind in the second game, the latter time by scoring in its final two at-bats.
"We were very pleased," OC coach
Tom Heath said. "Pittsburg State is a very, very good ball club and always has been. We felt like we competed very well against them.
"In the first game … we couldn't get the timely hit we needed, but in the second game we came back and … our hitters came through with big hits."
Finch, the only senior on the OC roster, put the Lady Eagles up 3-1 in the fourth inning with her homer that bounced off the top of the left-field wall and over the fence.
Bridget White, who reached base through being hit by a pitch, scored ahead of Finch.
Alex Perez's two-run triple keyed a three-run sixth inning for Pittsburg State (10-5), but OC left-hander
Madison Hagood (5-3) limited further damage, retiring three of the Gorillas' next four batters.
OC tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Finch hit a one-out single to center field, took second base on a sacrifice by
Kirsten Scott and scored on a single to left by
Sheridan Bond.
In the seventh,
Jordan Chism drew a leadoff walk from Pittsburg State starter Morgan Myers (2-4). Chism moved to second on a groundout by
Haley Squier and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Finch's single brought her home with the winning run.
"Kelsie had a great day," Heath said. "She came through (in the seventh) with a line drive up the middle. It was a great, great ending to a second game."
In the first game, the Gorillas picked up a solo homer by Kylie Guthier during a three-run fourth inning and a three-run homer in the fifth by Jenna Bolton off OC starter
Madison Nordyke (1-5). Bolton's shot put Pittsburg State up 6-1.
OC rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two on a single by
Lacey Davidson and another on a single by Nordyke. The Lady Eagles had the potential tying run on base in the seventh inning with one out, but stranded those runners. They also left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings.
Emmie Robertson (8-1) went the distance for the second time this season against OC, striking out eight batters. Nordyke also threw a complete game and recorded seven strikeouts.
OC will return to Heartland Conference action on Friday and Saturday, hosting Texas A&M International in a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m., with a single game Saturday at noon.
