Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 19, 2016) – In decidedly different ways, Oklahoma Christian dropped its first two softball games on Friday on the opening day of the Rattler Invitational.
OC nearly rallied from a seven-run deficit but fell 10-7 to Texas A&M International, then had No. 10-ranked Tarleton State (Texas) on the ropes before the TexAnns won 4-3 on a walkoff home run in the seventh inning.
OC (4-7) and TAMIU (8-10) are Heartland Conference rivals, but played a nonconference contest as part of the event hosted by a third Heartland school, St. Mary's (Texas). TAMIU went ahead 4-0 in the second inning, with Taylor Vines' three-run double off OC starter
Kaylie Upton (1-1) the big blow.
The Lady Eagles answered with a three-run third, with
Jordan Chism and
Haley Squier each doubling during the inning, but a three-run homer by TAMIU's Anna Parnin in the bottom of the inning put the Dustdevils up 7-3.
TAMIU made it 10-3 in the fifth on a two-run single by Krissy Sardelich before a four-run OC outburst in the sixth, keyed by a two-run single down the right-field line by
Avery Walker. Squier's run-scoring single scored Walker and pulled the Lady Eagles within 10-7.
Singles by
Lacey Davidson and
Alexus Vanlandingham with one out in the seventh, but TAMIU pitcher Delainy Thompson (2-0) retired
Sheridan Bond and Walker on fly balls to end the game.
Against Tarleton State (10-3), OC led 1-0 in the first after Walker scored on a single up the middle by
Niki Davidson. The Lady Eagles made it 2-0 in the fifth, as Vanlandingham scored on an error after stealing third base. Tarleton State answered with a single run in the bottom of the fifth, but Squier's RBI double in the top of the sixth scored Chism (who had reached on an infield single) and OC led 3-1.
Tarleton State loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on a single and two walks and the TexAnns tied the game at 3-3. In the seventh, Rebeka Allen hit a leadoff homer against OC reliever
Madison Nordyke (1-3) to give the TexAnns the win.
Haley Freyman (8-2) went the distance in the circle for Tarleton State.
OC will face Central Oklahoma and St. Mary's in games on Saturday.
