Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 1, 2016) – Oklahoma Christian was overdue for a break this season, and the Eagles received a major one on Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M International.
TAMIU dominated most of the game, but it was OC that converted on an early set piece and then hung on for dear life in the final minutes to close out a 1-0 win at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (3-6-1, 1-4-1 Heartland Conference) not only picked up its first league win of the season, the Eagles posted their second straight shutout and ended a six-game winless streak in the process. It was OC's second straight one-goal win over TAMIU (3-6, 2-4) at home, as the Eagles prevailed 1-0 over the Dustdevils last season in a nonconference meeting.
"It wasn't pretty, but that doesn't matter at the end of the day," OC coach
David Scott said. "We got the result, and that was the important part.
"We've struggled to score goals the last few weeks and found ways to give up goals with some mistakes. But we've got two shutouts in a row now and we got the goal that made the difference today. If we can continue the defensive play and start putting in a few on the other end, we'll be in good shape."
The game's only goal came in the 16th minute. OC senior
Cody Cook set up for a free kick on the right side of the field, about 35 yards from the goal, and lofted the ball into the penalty area. Freshman defender
Jackson Bojanowski stretched his 6-foot-3 frame up to head the ball past TAMIU goalkeeper Roberto Molina. It was Bojanowski's first collegiate goal.
After that, OC's offensive chances were few and far between, while the Dustdevils – who posted a 17-5 edge in shots, including 6-0 after halftime – continually kept the pressure coming.
OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker made five saves, two of the outstanding variety. His kick save on a shot by Javier Soto in the 28th minute prevented a near-certain goal, as did a stop on a free kick from 20 yards out by TAMIU's Marcelo Machado in the 66th minute.
The Eagles' defensive back line – including
Tyler Buchanan, Bojanowski,
Sergio Flores and
Matthew Tedford – cleared away chance after chance for TAMIU, frustrating the Dustdevils and helping Helker. TAMIU didn't manage a shot in the final 11½ minutes despite controlling the ball for long periods during that stretch.
"Evan has played big for us the last two games and the back four really stepped up and solidified things and rose to the challenge," Scott said. "They won pretty much every ball that was played in and gave us great effort."
Molina made two saves for the Dustdevils.
OC will be on the road for a pair of games next week, visiting Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday and Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Friday.
