Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 10, 2015) – It certainly wasn't a thing of beauty , except for the final score, but Oklahoma Christian took care of business on Tuesday night against Central Christian (Kan.).
The Eagles picked up penalty-kick goals from
Anthony Buchanan and
Ante Susic in the first half before
Cody McLemore closed the game out in the 89th minute with his second career goal, capping a night during which OC celebrated hosting its first athletic event since becoming a full member of NCAA Division II earlier this month.
It also was the home debut for the 30th season of the OC men's soccer program, which began in 1986.
OC (2-1) started the game with only 13 healthy field-position players and Central Christian (1-3) played a physical brand of soccer that tested the Eagles, who held possession for long stretches but had trouble getting clear shots at the goal.
In the 27th minute, Buchanan made a move on the left side of the penalty box toward the goal and was taken down by Central Christian's Takahiro Koga. Buchanan sent the ensuing penalty kick past Central Christian goalkeeper Luis Soto to put OC ahead. It was Buchanan's team-leading third goal in as many games.
About `12 minutes later, Susic also had a clear path to the goal when he was fouled by Agustine Riccombeni in the penalty box. Susic converted the penalty kick to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Buchanan and Soto collided while going for a loose ball early in the second half and both players left the game. In the 59th minute, Central Christian's Sebastian Diaz Carbo received a red card and was ejected, leaving the Tigers to finish the game with only 10 players.
The Tigers' best chance to score came in the 73rd minute, when OC defender
Sergio Flores cleared a shot by Joshua Taylor off the goal line.
McLemore sealed the OC win late, taking a cross from the left side from
Stephen Tower and beating Central Christian goalkeeper Josh Paine to make it 3-0.
OC only outshot the Tigers 17-16, but nine of the Eagles' shots were on goal, compared to only four for Central Christian. OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker made four saves while recording the shutout, while Soto had four saves and Paine had two for Central Christian.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, when they will host crosstown rival Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m.
