Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (March 28, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian just took what it was given on Saturday afternoon against Newman (Kan.) at McCarthy Field – then took a bit more.
Two outs away from losing, the Eagles tied the game thanks to two errors by Newman infielders before
Kyle Lacy delivered a grand slam to cap a six-run ninth-inning rally that gave OC a 10-6 win in the finale of the three-game Heartland Conference baseball series.
OC (18-11, 7-5 Heartland) won its third straight league series and moved into a tie with Texas-Permian Basin for fourth place in the Heartland standings. The Eagles will host UTPB next Friday and Saturday for a three-game series.
Kolton Brown played a key role for OC in the win over Newman (13-14, 5-7), going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and pitching the final three innings to record his first collegiate win.
Down 2-0 entering the fifth, OC scored four runs – one each on RBI hits by
Derek Jones and Brown, two others on an error by Newman third baseman Garett Thomas. But the Jets answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, a rally keyed by Andrew Standish's RBI double to left field. Alex Lator's run-scoring single put Newman up 5-4.
The Jets made it 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth when Aaron Mack's double off Brown drove in Thomas.
Jones walked to open the top of the ninth for OC and Newman brought in reliever Lane Ramsey (1-2). Ramsey recorded one out before Brown reached on an error by Thomas.
Brady Baugh then reached on an error by first baseman Croix Sedillo that also allowed Jones to score to make it 6-5.
Austin Orth's single through the left side of the infield scored Brown to tie the game. After a groundout by
Cody Rosecrans put runners on second and third base,
Ryan Ward drew a walk to load the bases. That set the stage for Lacy, whose line drive just cleared the right-field fence for his fourth home run of the season.
Brown (1-0) ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the ninth, as the Jets put two runners on base with one out, but retired Standish on a fly ball and struck out Thomas looking to end the game.
The Eagles will host crosstown rival Oklahoma City University on Tuesday before hosting the series against Texas-Permian Basin.
