Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 13, 2015) – It was just one of those days for Oklahoma Christian on Friday against NCAA Division II regional power West Texas A&M.
In their 2015 home-opening doubleheader, the Eagles managed only seven hits in 14 innings against three pitchers as West Texas A&M pulled off a sweep with 5-1 and 12-0 wins at Dobson Field.
West Texas A&M (5-2), which was fourth in the preseason South Central Region baseball rankings, did most of its damage during three big innings against OC (1-4), the 10th-place squad in those same region rankings.
"We didn't swing the bat very well today," OC coach
Lonny Cobble said. "We didn't give ourselves a chance. … We still have some work to do. We're a totally different team than last year and we're going to get it figured out.
"We've played a great schedule. I think that's going to be good for us in the long run. We've got a young team and a lot of new faces. We've got some guys that need to be battle-tested going into conference. That's what we kind of wanted to do this year with the schedule. We're looking forward to tomorrow to see if we can get better."
In the opener, OC senior
Dillon Endecott (0-1) and West Texas A&M's Tyler Gibson (1-0) staged an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. The Eagles broke through in the fifth, scratching out a run when
Zac Cobble reached on a fielders' choice and chugged home on a double to right field by
Jordan Lopez.
But Endecott – who finished with seven strikeouts – ran into trouble in the sixth, as the first two runners for the Buffaloes reached base. West Texas A&M eventually loaded the bases against reliever
Dylon Sturges with two outs and tied the game when OC third baseman
Cody Rosecrans couldn't handle a bad-hop grounder by Ryan March.
Trace Hansen drew a bases-loaded walk and Mason Shiflett followed with a two-run single to right field that made it 4-1. The Buffaloes added an insurance run in the seventh. Gibson struck out seven in six innings and Sean Michel pitched a scoreless seventh for West Texas A&M.
Five-run innings in the fourth and sixth staked West Texas to a run-rule win in the second game. March and Matt Cole each had three RBIs for the Buffaloes.
Ben McKenzie had two of OC's three hits, including a seventh-inning triple to left-center field.
Justin Disbro (1-0) went the distance for the Buffaloes on the mound, striking out six. OC starter
Luke Sandoval (0-1) took the loss despite recording four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
OC and West Texas A&M will complete their three-game series at noon on Saturday. The Buffaloes then will take on Dakota State (S.D.) about 3 p.m., then OC and Dakota State will play at 6 p.m.
