Box Score SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 17, 2015) – For the second time in three days, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles suffered overtime heartbreak.
The Eagles surrendered a golden goal only 29 seconds into the extra period, allowing St. Mary's (Texas) to escape Sigma Beta Chi Field with a 2-1 decision on Saturday afternoon in a key Heartland Conference soccer game.
OC (8-6, 2-4 Heartland Conference), which also lost in OT at Texas A&M International on Thursday, still has a shot at making the league's four-team postseason tournament. But the Eagles, ranked 10th in NCAA Division II's South Central Region, now will need to sweep their final two conference games, at home against Rogers State and Newman (Kan.), and hope other league results fall their way.
St. Mary's (6-7, 2-3) had the benefit of a 25 mph wind at its back in the first half, but it was the Eagles who scored first.
Ante Susic took a throw-in from
Stephen Tower in the fourth minute and scored on a strike from about 32 yards out, putting his shot into the right corner of the goal past St. Mary's goalkeeper Jack Moore. It was Susic's team-high fifth goal of the season.
The Rattlers, who outshot OC 24-10, equalized in the 53rd minute when Victor Luna connected from a difficult angle from the right of the net. Ignacio Fernandez and Wren May received assists on the play.
St. Mary's struck quickly in overtime, with Juan Sanchez scoring off a deflection in front of the OC goal.
OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker recorded five saves.
The Eagles visit archrival Southern Nazarene on Thursday in a nonconference game in what will be the last of five straight road games, then host Rogers State on Saturday.
