Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 6, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian most certainly deserved a better result than it received Saturday night in its season opener against archrival Southern Nazarene at the Eagle Soccer Field.
The Eagles rallied to force overtime after falling into an early two-goal hole and controlled the action for much of the game, posting a 25-15 edge in shots. But it was SNU that walked away a 3-2 winner, with Blake Rodgers scoring a golden goal 4:06 into overtime.
Edgar Pinada assisted on the winning goal and scored two others for SNU (1-1), which snapped a 12-game losing streak that dated back to last season, when the Crimson Storm finished 2-16.
"That's what we get for giving up two early goals," OC coach
David Scott said. "You have to spend so much energy coming back and we didn't have it in overtime."
A pair of defensive lapses cost OC (0-1). In the sixth minute, a feed by Ismael Fernandez gave Pineda a one-on-one with OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker and Pineda won that battle to put the Crimson Storm ahead. In the 18th minute, Pineda made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal.
OC pulled within 2-1 in the 32nd minute, with sophomore
Troy Tippeconnic's cross from the left side finding
Ante Susic, who curled a shot around SNU goalkeeper Jeff Ray.
The Eagles kept up the pressure for most of the second half and finally broke through again in the 69th minute, when Tippeconnic scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty box. Tippeconnic's only goal last season also came on a free kick against SNU.
SNU proved to be the aggressor once overtime began and ended the game quickly. Pineda took the ball on the right side of the field and crossed into Rodgers, who beat Helker for the game-winner.
Helker finished with two saves while Ray recorded nine for SNU, keeping the Crimson Storm in the game.
OC will be off until Friday, when the Eagles will host Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at 7:30 p.m.
