Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 14, 2014) – The scouting report on Colorado School of Mines was that the Orediggers could do a lot of damage off set pieces, and that proved painfully accurate on Sunday afternoon for Oklahoma Christian.
Colorado Mines scored its first two goals off a free kick and a long throw-in, respectively, and posted a decisive 4-0 win over OC at the Eagle Soccer Field in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Richard Garvey had two goals and an assist for Colorado Mines (2-1), which lost 1-0 to NCAA Division II No. 25 West Texas A&M in its opener before beating No. 7-ranked Northeastern State 1-0 on Friday.
OC (1-2) gave up an early goal and spent most of the game defending, as the Orediggers outshot the Eagles 19-8.
"All the scouting reports told us they were a very hard-working team and they put you under pressure and make you make mistakes," OC coach
David Scott said. "That's exactly what happened today."
In the 18th minute, Colorado Mines seized the lead when Garvey rose up in the penalty box to head in a booming free kick, taken from close to midfield by Tannor Randle.
The Orediggers made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, as a long throw-in by Jackson Shelledy found the head of teammate Ryan Leach in a crowded penalty box.
Colorado Mines' other two goals came in quick succession, just 75 seconds apart. Nikolaus Grotz's cross from the right side set up Garvey for an easy 8-yard shot in the 74th minute, and Garvey assisted on the Orediggers' final goal, by Allan Foster III, moments later.
"I think our mental toughness has improved a little bit over 90 minutes," Scott said. "We played well in stretches. We kept it 1-0 at halftime and created some chances for ourselves, but just over the course of the game, the focus just wasn't quite there today and a team like this will punish you for those mistakes."
OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker finished with one save. His Colorado Mines counterpart, Collin Hall, had two saves – one on a long shot by OC's
Matt McLain in the 28th minute and another on a blast by
Ante Susic from near the edge of the penalty box in the 73rd minute.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they host sister school Harding (Ark.).
