Texas-Permian Basin ends OC win streak with doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ODESSA, Texas (March 14, 2014) – It wasn't hard to pinpoint why Texas-Permian Basin swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma Christian on Friday at Roden Field.

UTPB pitchers limited the Eagles to just 10 hits in the doubleheader, allowing the Falcons to sweep OC 2-0 and 6-5 in 10 innings on the opening day of their three-game Heartland Conference series.

OC (11-7, 7-4 Heartland) had swept its last two conference series and entered the opener on a seven-game winning streak, the Eagles' longest since the university revived its baseball program in 2008. But UTPB (12-12, 4-4) played confident against an OC squad that debuted at No. 9 this week in the South Central Region rankings.

UTPB starter Andrew Grifol (2-2) outdueled OC's Brandon Pierce (3-2) in a battle of aces in the first game. Both threw complete games, with Pierce striking out eight and walking none in a three-hitter while Grifol fanned six and walked one in a two-hitter. Not surprisingly with such effective pitching, the game lasted only 77 minutes.

The Falcons scored both their runs in the fourth. Grifol, batting second in the order for the Falcons in addition to his pitching duties, led off with a single to right field. Two outs later, Ty Morgan homered over the right-field wall.

OC managed only a leadoff single in the fourth inning by A.J. Florence and a two-out, fifth-inning double by Cory Eastwood.

UTPB jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning of the second game against OC starter Kelby Reneau thanks to RBI singles by Trey Cochran and Ryan Arrick. OC got one run back in the third, with Jordan Lopez's infield single scoring Florence.

The Eagles went ahead 4-2 in the top of the sixth, with Sean Murphy's two-run double keying a three-run outburst. But UTPB answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 5-4.

Markus Carr walked and scored on a throwing error by UTPB reliever Brad Paramapoonya (4-0) in the top of the ninth to force extra innings. But the Falcons won the game in the 10th against OC reliever Dillon Endecott (0-1), as Cochran led off with a single to left field, Neil Madsen followed with a double and Morgan delivered a sacrifice fly to score Cochran.

Carr and Robert Rosser each had two hits for OC.

The teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
