Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 3, 2014) – Just as the season ends, Oklahoma Christian finally seems to have started producing on offense.
For the second time in three games, the Eagles rolled to a 3-0 win over an opponent, beating Texas-Permian Basin by that score on an overcast, windy Monday afternoon in the 2014 finale at the Eagle Soccer Field.
Senior midfielder
Domenico DeGrazia had a goal and an assist for OC (4-9-1, 3-5 Heartland Conference), which scored seven goals in its final three games after tallying only 11 in its first 11 contests.
"It gives us a little confidence going into the offseason," OC coach
David Scott said. "We struggled a little bit this year to score goals, and to get three in the last game, that was good for us.
"I feel like we're close to where we need to be" to compete in the Heartland, he said, "…but it's still a long way. Hopefully we can take that with us through the offseason and come back strong next year."
OC dropped a wild 6-5 decision to UTPB (2-13-1, 1-7) last season, so the Eagles wanted to start quickly on Monday. OC took the 15-20 mph south wind in the first half and that decision eventually produced dividends.
In the 31st minute, a UTPB defender fouled OC defender
Matt McLain, who was setting up in the penalty box for a shot attempt. That earned the Eagles a penalty kick, which DeGrazia converted for his fourth goal of the season and the 26th of his career.
Nine minutes later, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead.
Fraol Legesse sent a crisp pass to
Sergio Flores on the right side, and Flores found
Cole Rinke open in the box. Rinke's shot from eight yards beat goalkeeper Eric Beltran.
Not satisfied with a 2-0 lead, OC quickly extended its lead after halftime on a goal in the 48th minute, with
Taylor Vanderford heading in a free kick by DeGrazia. OC eventually outshot the Falcons 24-14.
Even with the wind, the Falcons rarely threatened to score as OC posted its fourth shutout of the season. All of the Eagles' wins in 2014 came by shutout – against Ouachita Baptist (Ark.), Dallas Baptist (Texas) and Rogers State, the latter a 3-0 win last Monday.
OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker made six saves in his 78½-minute stint before freshman
Korey Bartel relieved him. Bartel, making only his second appearance of the season, recorded one save in 11½ minutes .
UTPB goalkeeper Eric Beltran made eight saves.
The game was the last one for the Eagles' three seniors – McLain, from Yukon, and DeGrazia and
Angel Nisi, both from Caracas, Venezuela. DeGrazia had nine shots for the Eagles on Monday while Nisi took two. McLain, meanwhile, made his 65th straight start in as many career games and again anchored the OC defense.
"All three seniors played great today," Scott said. "They have meant a lot to our program. "
