Stanford, Brown, Dawkins score, Newberry rebounds as Lady Eagles rout York in opener

Senior Makenzie Brown looks to pass during Saturday's win over York (Neb.). Brown scored 13 points for the Lady Eagles.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 15, 2014) – McKenzie Stanford reaching double figures in points isn't a real surprise for Oklahoma Christian – she's done that numerous times before.

But OC also picked up double-figure stat performances from some unexpected sources on Saturday, and that fueled what turned into an 88-56 rout of York (Neb.) in the traditional homecoming season opener in a nearly-full Eagles' Nest.

Senior center Makenzie Brown scored 13 points – reaching double figures for the first time since her freshman season – while freshman forward Hope Dawkins made a memorable debut, going 6-of-6 from the free-throw line en route to a 14-point outing.

Both of those outings were impressive, but so was a career-best 10-rebound showing by senior forward Skyler Newberry, who accomplished that in just 16 minutes of playing time. She lifted the Lady Eagles to a slight 50-49 edge in rebounding after they trailed 25-20 in that category at halftime.

"They were playing hard," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "Skyler is just an Energizer bunny and she goes hard and Makenzie Brown goes hard. Logan (McKee) and Kat (Kaitlyn Morris) go hard on the defensive end. That group of seniors teaches everybody to just keep putting out the effort.

"I was real pleased with how Skyler was going to get some rebounds. We've made that a challenge, to (find out) who's going to replace all the rebounds we lost (from last season). Skyler stepped up to that challenge today. I hope everybody else follows along."

OC (1-0) led York (1-2) most of the way. The Lady Eagles seized control with an early 15-2 run and led 18-9 after Newberry's only basket, eight minutes into the game. A 14-3 spurt, capped by a three-point play by Logan McKee, made it 38-19 and the Lady Eagles led 41-23 at halftime.

The Panthers never made a serious run in the second half. Brown scored 10 points after halftime, even sinking a pair of 3-pointers – her first makes from behind the arc since her sophomore season. She also recorded a career-high two blocked shots and was one of seven Lady Eagles to swat at least one York attempt.

Stanford, OC's second-leading returning scorer, was consistent throughout, finishing 8-of-15 from the field. The Lady Eagles shot 45.7 percent from the field as a team (32 of 70), although they connected on just 21.4 percent (6 of 28) from 3-point range and a disconcerting 58.1 percent from the free-throw line (18-of-31).

"McKenzie Stanford is our workhorse," Findley said. "We need to have that kind of game out of her every night. That will help open up the 3-point line for those guards, once she can do that."

There also was a bit of OC women's hoops history in the game. When freshman guard Chandler Coale entered the game with 3:55 left in the first half, she became the first second-generation player during Findley's 30-season tenure as the Lady Eagles' coach. Coale's mother, Sherri Coale, played under Findley at OC in the 1980s and now is the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.

York didn't have a single player reach double digits in points and committed 24 turnovers while shooting 25.8 percent (17 of 66) from the field. Cory Minjarez led the Panthers with nine points, while Jacqueline Esquivel, Alexandra Payne and Elizabeth Maher scored eight each. MacKenzie Eller did grab 12 rebounds for York, which plays at the NAIA Division II level.

OC will travel across Edmond on Tuesday for a game against Central Oklahoma, then will host Texas Wesleyan on Thursday and USAO on Saturday.
