Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 1, 2014) – Down 2-0 to Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Senior Night, Oklahoma Christian seniors
Matt McLain and
Domenico DeGrazia gave the Eagles a chance for a late comeback, but it wasn't quite enough.
McLain earned a penalty kick in the 83rd minute and DeGrazia converted it, but OC managed only one shot the rest of the way and lost 2-1 to the Chaparrals on a chilly Saturday night at the Eagle Soccer Field.
OC (3-9-1, 2-5 Heartland Conference) outshot Lubbock Christian 19-17, but coach
David Scott said his team seemed a step slow for most of the game.
"The guys fought hard at the end to get back into it, but we just kind of wasted a lot of chances tonight and it's tough to get a result that way," Scott said.
Lubbock Christian (7-5-1, 5-2) took advantage of a defensive error by the Eagles to score its first goal. In the 33rd minute, the ball went to the Chaparrals' Tommy Fogarty-Cameron, who dribbled unimpeded about 30 yards before shooting from 15 yards out past OC goalkeeper
Evan Helker.
The Chaparrals made it 2-0 in the 67th minute. After a Lubbock Christian corner kick, the ball caromed off an OC defender to Matt Santos, who caught Helker leaning the wrong way. It was Santos' first goal of the season.
Looking to rally, the Eagles began pushing defenders forward on the attack, and McLain was fouled by Lubbock Christian goalkeeper Tim Saucedo in the penalty box. DeGrazia, who was honored along with McLain and fellow senior
Angel Nisi before the game, beat Saucedo on the ensuing penalty kick, giving the Eagles hope.
It was OC's first goal against the Chaparrals since a 2010 game, a span of more than 384 minutes of playing time.
OC's only shot after DeGrazia's goal, however, was a long one from
Cody Cook in the 87th minute, and a Lubbock Christian defender blocked it. The Eagles drew a free kick from about 30 yards out in the final seconds, but couldn't get off a shot.
"We were just a little slow all night, then in the last 15 minutes, once it's 2-0 down, we kind of woke up and started playing a little better," Scott said. "It was a great job by a senior, Matt, attacking the ball on the initial service to win the penalty, then Domenico putting it away. It was nice for them to get a little bit of recognition on Senior Night."
Helker finished with five saves for OC, while Saucedo had four for the Chaparrals. Lubbock Christian moved to 5-0 all-time against OC.
The Eagles will wrap up their season on Monday afternoon, when they host conference rival Texas-Permian Basin.
