Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. (Oct. 27, 2014) – A stalwart in Oklahoma Christian's defensive backfield,
Cody Cook also has developed into a free-kick specialist for the Eagles. He put those skills to excellent use on Monday afternoon.
The sophomore from Edmond scored a pair of goals – one on a long-range bullet from 35 yards out, another on a curled free kick from 20 yards away – to lead OC to a 3-0 win over Rogers State at Soldier Field, giving the Eagles their first road win in more than a calendar year.
Freshman goalkeeper
Korey Bartel, making his first career appearance, relieved the injured
Evan Helker and completed the third shutout of the season for OC (3-8-1, 2-4 Heartland Conference).
"It was a great effort by the entire team today," OC coach
David Scott said. "We have played well over the past few weeks, but we just haven't been able to put it all together to get a result. We talked after the Newman game (a 1-0 loss on Saturday) about being too wasteful and needing to make more of our chances to take some pressure off of ourselves defensively to have to be perfect."
Scott offered many kudos after Monday's win – not just for Cook and Bartel, but for
Cole Rinke (who scored OC's third goal), the Eagles' defensive back line of
Matt McLain,
Clay Collier,
Sergio Flores and Cook, the midfield combination of
Taylor Vanderford and
Seth Brown and … well, here's what he said:
"The back four were sold and in the midfield we were physical and won a lot of the 50-50 balls," Scott said. "We got some great work from Taylor and Seth to be a presence for us. The front players worked extremely hard to keep pressure high up the field to make it hard for them to play out of the back cleanly. There was some great selfless work from them to help with the overall effort."
Cook, who entered the game with two career goals, put OC ahead in the 18th minute with the 35-yard shot, which was assisted by
Ante Susic. Cook made it 2-0 in the 30th minute with his free kick from just outside the penalty box.
Rinke's goal – on a shot from about 18 yards after what Scott called a "nice, solid run" – in the 73rd minute put the Eagles up 3-0. OC won going away despite being outshot 16-9 by the Hillcats (7-9, 3-4).
Helker didn't record a save in his 20-plus minutes of work, but Bartel ended up with six saves for the Eagles. Rogers State goalkeeper Joey Arnold was credited with one save.
"Korey had a couple of tough saves but did well to deal with everything he faced," Scott said.
Before Monday, the Eagles' last road win came on Oct. 14, 2013, at Dallas Baptist (Texas).
OC will wrap up its season with a pair of home games – against Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday and Lubbock Christian (Texas) next Monday.
