Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 13, 2014) – On a dreary, cold and wet afternoon, Oklahoma Christian went out and just took care of business on Monday against visiting Dallas Baptist (Texas).
Seth Brown scored in the first half,
Ante Susic scored in the second half and a defense led by defender
Matt McLain and goalkeeper
Evan Helker pitched a shutout as the Eagles won 2-0.
OC (2-5-1, 1-1 Heartland) overcame playing conditions that were some of the worst encountered by any Eagle squad in any game since the program began in 1986. The game started in steady rain, with a 30-35 mph north wind making it feel considerably colder than the air temperature of 54 degrees.
As the game progressed, the rain stopped but the wind didn't, while the saturated field – which had several spots of standing water – became a muddy mess.
"We told the guys before the game that today was going to be a game that we just have to come out and manage, not make mistakes with the way the field is and just play safe," Scott said. "We managed things and made sure we didn't give any balls away in our half of the field.
"It's not ideal conditions. We told the guys before the game, again, that, 'It's not going to be pretty today. It's not going to be attractive. Just get the job done.' They came out and they fought and challenged and we did what we needed to do."
OC had the benefit of the wind in the first half and took advantage just before halftime.
Troy Tippeconnic started the play with a booming cross from the right side, about 30 yards from the goal. Brown headed that cross past Dallas Baptist goalkeeper Chuck Schober in the 41st minute.
The wind shifted from north to west in the second half, depriving Dallas Baptist (3-8-1, 0-2) of the same advantage the Eagles had enjoyed. OC was able to match the Patriots on shots 7-7 in the second half, with the Eagles having a 16-12 advantage in the game.
Susic put the Eagles up 2-0 in the 53rd minute. Schober saved an initial shot by OC's
Brandon Little Axe, but Susic put in the rebound.
Helker, who finished with seven saves, kept Dallas Baptist off the scoreboard with a handful of acrobatic saves. Meanwhile, McLain – who has started every game for OC since arriving as a freshman in 2011 – routinely cleared the ball out of danger throughout the contest.
"Those two played great," Scott said. "Evan had a couple of good saves in the first half, when it was still 0-0 and Matt has been solid and a good organizer for us. That was a big performance from both those guys."
