Eagles get behind early, fall 13-4 at No. 25 St. Edward’s

AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 6, 2013) – A day after taking the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II baseball to the wire, Oklahoma Christian fell into a deep hole and couldn't dig its way out against another ranked Heartland Conference foe.

No. 25 St. Edward's (Texas) jumped on OC pitchers Cale Coshow and Kelby Reneau for 10 runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 13-4 win over the Eagles on Wednesday at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

Unlike Tuesday, when the Eagles nearly upset No. 1 St. Mary's (Texas) before falling 3-2 in 11 innings, OC (1-2) couldn't slow down an explosive offensive foe.

C.J.  Manning put St. Edward's (3-1) ahead 2-0 with a two-run single in the bottom of the second off Coshow. The Eagles answered with an unearned run in the top of the third, but the Hilltoppers scored four runs in the bottom of the third on just one hit, as Coshow (0-1) walked two batters and hit four others with pitches, three of those in a row.

OC battled back within 6-4 against St. Edward's starter Paul Smith with a three-run fourth, with Evan Draper and Caleb Price delivering RBI singles, but the Eagles managed only two hits the rest of the way against four relievers, including Matt Davis (1-0).

Marshall Burford's bases-loaded double off Reneau keyed a four-run bottom of the fourth for the Hilltoppers, giving them a 10-4 lead.

Draper went 2-for-3 and scored a run to lead OC's offense.

The Eagles will be off until Tuesday, when they visit St. Gregory's. OC will play its home opener the following day against conference rival Oklahoma Panhandle State.
