Softball squad falls in season openers

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Feb. 19, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian softball team dropped both season openers on Friday losing to Southwestern Oklahoma State University 12-6 and Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) 4-2.

In the Lady Eagles' first game against Southwestern Oklahoma State, the OC squad took the lead early scoring two runs in the first inning and holding the Lady Bulldogs to none. Amber Canady scored off a DaVee Croy double shortly followed by a score from Amy Urbanovsky on an error.

The Lady Eagles picked up two more runs in the third when Ashley Calles hit a homerun and Croy was batted in by Lauren Walk to lead the Lady Bulldogs 4-0.

At the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, the Lady Bulldogs responded scoring three runs in each to take the lead 6-4.

In the sixth inning the Lady Eagles tied up the game after Calles hit her second homer with Christin Dobbs on base to bring in two runs.

At the bottom of the sixth, the SWOSU women let loose and scored six runs, five of which came from two homeruns.

The Lady Eagles failed to score in the seventh leaving the game to the Lady Bulldogs at 12-6.

Urbanovsky and Croy both went three for four at the plate while Calles went two for three and tallied three RBIs.

In the second game against Southwest Baptist, the Lady Eagles struggled to score against the Lady Bearcats.

The SBU women pick up three scores in the second inning off of two errors by the Lady Eagles.

The OC women reacted in the third scoring two of their own. Dobbs hit a double to bat in Michelle Miller before Calles took the plate and doubled to send in Dobbs leaving the Lady Eagles down 2-3.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Bearcats gained another run to make the score 4-2. Neither team scored following the third inning leaving the Lady Bearcats as the victors.

Sophia McKean pitched 5 innings for the Lady Eagles and tallied three strikeouts and only one earned run.

Leigh Leonard led at the plate going two for three while both Dobbs and Calles had an RBI apiece.

The Lady Eagles will go head to head again with both teams on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
