Fresh off winning his 500th game at Oklahoma Christian, Dan Hays and the OC men's basketball team knocked off sixth-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Texas Wesleyan University 70-61 here Tuesday night.
The Eagles gained a measure of revenge against the Rams after a 67-62 loss to TWU in last year's NAIA "Sweet 16."
OC trailed much of the first half with TWU extending the lead to as many as seven points in a physical half. The Eagles rallied in the closing minutes of the opening half and took their first lead of the game when senior guard Keith Harris knocked down a 16-foot jump shot at the 2:40 mark. Harris' connected on a free throw with :01 to give OC a 36-35 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles and Rams exchanged four leads and one tie in a seesaw battle. But OC gradually built a lead and saw it grow to 10 points when Micah Miles scored off the glass from a Charles Baldwin running pass with 3:05 left. OC extended the lead to as many as 12 in the final minutes.
Harris led all scorers with 28 points, with 20 coming in the first half. Baldwin added 19 points while Patrick Grewe scored 10 and grabbed eight rebounds. Evan Patterson led the Rams with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
OC's next game comes Monday, Nov. 13 at home against Hillsdale Baptist (Okla.). The Lady Eagles play a single game against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) Saturday night at 6 p.m. and meet Hillsdale Baptist at 6 p.m. before the Nov. 13 men's game.
