OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 7, 2008) – It took the Oklahoma Christian University men's and women's soccer teams extra time, but both pulled out exciting Sooner Athletic Conference wins over Rogers State University (Okla.) on Tuesday night.
The Lady Eagles won 2-1 in overtime, while the Eagles were 3-2 victors in an extra period. The win runs the women's record to 5-4-1 and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Eagles are 4-3-3 and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The women's game kicked off under blustery conditions and wind wreaked havoc through most of the game.
OC capitalized on the wind advantage in the first half. Sophomore Emma Cole put the Lady Eagles ahead 1-0 at the 37:44 mark when she arced a high shot over RSU goalkeeper Bailey Lynn's reach.
OC hung on to the lead through halftime and over the first eight-plus minutes of the second half. But the Hillcats (9-2, 3-1) tied things up when Carey Cloud was awarded a penalty kick and booted the ball home to make it 1-1.
The teams grappled through scoreless action the rest of the way in regulation to set up overtime.
But it would not take OC long to end the contest. Cole again chimed in from long distance just 3:06 into overtime to send the game to a dramatic finish and hand OC its first win ever over RSU.
The Lady Eagles outshot the Hillcats 22-10 in regulation and 4-0 in overtime. The foul count was even at 12-12 and RSU managed a 6-5 edge in penalty kicks.
Cole's double-goal effort vaults her into the team lead with six goals on the year. The Tyreso, Sweden, product scored three goals in 2007 as a freshman.
Lisa Jorgensen was solid in goal again for OC. The senior played 100 minutes and picked up three saves against one goal allowed.
In the nightcap, the Eagles got off to a hot start when Ryan Frampton headed in his second goal of the season off of a free kick from Neil Hilton in the 12th minute to make it 1-0.
The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 in the closing minutes of the first half when Trey Boykin scored a rebound goal off RSU goalkeeper Sean Surridge.
The Hillcats would answer early in second period with a long goal from Justin Friesen that nipped the Eagles' lead to 2-1.
Less than five minutes after Friesen put RSU on the board, Henrique Sousa added another goal to tie it at 2-2.
No one would score after the 52nd minute, and the game would go into overtime with the score still knotted at 2-2.
In overtime, the Eagles caught a break early when they were given a penalty kick after RSU was whistled for a handball in the box.
Cristian Fernandes took the penalty kick and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Eagles their first SAC win of 2008.
The game was physical, with the Eagles committing 20 fouls and Rogers State collecting 27. There were also four yellow cards given out (three to Rogers State and
one to the Eagles).
Fernandes ran his SAC-leading goal total to 12. Boykin ranks second on the squad with six goals.
The Eagles scored their three goals on 16 shots and goalkeeper Bryan Cochrum made four saves in the game to earn his fourth win of the season.
The teams are back in action against Oklahoma Baptist University on Friday in Shawnee. The women's match is slated for 3 p.m. with the men's game following at 5 p.m.
