Lady Eagles bow out at SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 2, 2008) – The Oklahoma Christian University softball team's 2008 season came to a close Friday with a 4-3 loss to Rogers State University (Okla.) in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament's consolation bracket.

The defeat takes Oklahoma Christian's final record to 31-25 on the season. The 30 wins are a first for the program since 2003.

Game one:

The Lady Eagles squared off with No. 9 Lubbock Christian in the round one, looking to knock off the Lady Chaps for the third time this season.

A sacrifice fly from Lisa Hernandez gave LCU a 1-0 lead in the second inning before both teams went scoreless through the next two frames.

The Lady Chaps added on in the sixth when Lisa Stratton connected on a RBI single, then Honda Rodriguez scored an error to make it 3-0.

OC tried to rally with one run in the home half of the sixth. Sandra Darmstadt bounced into a fielder's choice to plate Christin Dobbs to cut LCU's lead to 3-1.

But a scoreless seventh ensued, sending the Lady Chaps to the second round and the Lady Eagles to the consolation bracket.

OC managed just three hits in the loss, with Dobbs (1-for-3), Tracy Washam (1-for-3) and Darmstadt (1-for-3) each tallying one knock.

Linzi Farris fell to 12-9 on the year after going seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits.

Game two:

The day's second game pitted OC against Oklahoma Baptist in the tournament consolation. The Lady Eagles took both meetings with the Lady Bison in the regular season.

OC wasted little time getting on the scoreboard after Washam singled in Dobbs with one out in the first to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 edge.

The score held until the fourth inning when OBU's Sonya Beach hit a two-run homer to left field to put the Lady Bison on top 2-1.

OC loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth for Sandra Darmstadt who delivered a single to center to tie the game at 2-2.

Rachel Smith was then hit by a pitch after fouling off multiple offerings from Beach to bring Washam home and put the Lady Eagles ahead 3-2.

The Lady Bison again locked things at 3-3 with an unearned score in the sixth. Sophia Johnson then kept OBU off the board in the top of the seventh to set up OC's half.

Washam led off the inning with a base hit through the left side. Amy Urbanovsky then perfectly placed a bunt base hit down the third-base line that sent a hustling Washam all the way to third base.

After an intentional walk to Darmstadt, Brady lined the game winner up the middle to make it a 4-3 victory.

Johnson (5-9) picked up the win after 1 1/3 innings of one run (none earned) softball.

Washam was 3-for-3, while Brady was 2-for-4 with the game winner.

The win setup a 7 p.m. showdown with No. 15 Rogers State (Okla.). OC swept RSU on April 28 at home.

Game three:

RSU led 1-0 after an inning of action before OC claimed the edge with a two-run fourth. A RBI single from Brady led into a run-scoring double from Hejl to give the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Hillcats used a RBI double from Sara Walkup to pull back even in the bottom half at 2-2. Two batters later Katie Bointy dribbled a single up the middle to put RSU back up 3-2.

An inning later RSU's lead swelled to 4-2 when Kelli Dunagan laid down a suicide squeeze to bring Lillian Nevarez in from third.

Three straight base runners reached to start OC's sixth before Tiffany Sherman bounced into a fielder's choice to make it 4-3.

OC failed to tack on any more scores, resulting in a 4-3 final.

Dobbs (2-for-4), Smith (2-for-2) and Brady (2-for-3) all had two hits in the game. Farris was saddled with the loss to finish the year at 12-10.
