OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 21, 2009) – Oklahoma Christian University swept a doubleheader from Sooner Athletic Conference foe Rogers State University (Okla.) on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles held on to take game one 3-2, and brought out the lumber to win the second game 15-7.
Game One
The Lady Eagles got things going in the bottom of the second inning when Tiffany Sherman, Cara Miller and Kayla Jennings loaded the bases with three-straight singles. Then Leigh Leonard drove in Sherman on a fielder's choice to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Lady Eagles again loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Leonard, Christin Dobbs and Amber Canady. Amy Urbanovsky followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Leonard, and Casey Brady drove in Dobbs with another sacrifice fly to right to give OC a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles survived a scare in the top of seventh when RSU pushed two runs across on a shutout-spoiling two-out homer from Tanya Koch. But Leonard recovered to strike out the next batter to end the game at 3-2 OC.
Leonard threw all seven innings and only gave up two runs on seven hits. The Benton, Ky., product posted seven strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the year.
Urbanovsky and Brady led the Lady Eagles at the plate with 1-for-3, one-RBI outings.
Game Two
RSU (27-21, 9-13 SAC) got on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch to take an early 1-0 lead.
OC answered in the bottom of the first when Canady scored on an RSU throwing error to tie the game up at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second the Lady Eagles added another run when Dobbs singled through the right side to score Miller and up the lead to 2-1. Then RSU scored three runs to make the score 4-2 in the top of the third.
But the Lady Eagle offense took flight from there and outscored the Hillcats 13-3 the rest of the way to earn the run rule.
Tracy Washam and Sherman got things going in the bottom of third with back-to-back singles, then Miller reached on an RSU miscue to load the bases. Jennings singled through the left side of infield to cut into the RSU lead. Finally Miller and Sherman scored on another RSU error to give OC the lead 5-4, and the Lady Eagles never looked back.
OC scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Miller singled up the middle to bring in Urbanovsky, then Jennings doubled down the third-base line to score Miller and Brady to make the score 9-4.
After RSU scored three times in the top of the fifth, the Lady Eagles pushed across four more runs.
Urbanovsky doubled down the left-field line to drive in Dobbs and make the score 10-7. Sherman singled in Urbanovsky before Miller plated Washam and Brady with a base knock to give the Lady Eagles a 13-7 cushion.
The Lady Eagles finished off the run rule in the bottom of the sixth. After Dobbs scored on an RSU error, Washam cranked a doubled to left center to score Brady and end the game with a score of 15-7.
Farris (7-6) picked up her seventh win on the year after giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. The senior battled through four innings despite taking a line drive off the thigh in the first inning.
Sophia McKean blanked RSU and allowed only one hit in the final two frames. She entered with a three-run lead in the fifth inning, resulting in her team-best fifth save of the season.
Miller led the Lady Eagles at the dish in game two, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jennings also pitched in three RBIs with a 2-for-4 game at the plate. Dobbs was 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two runs and a RBI.
With the sweep, the Lady Eagles move their record to 27-16 on the season and 10-8 in SAC play. The team will return to action April 23 when they will travel to Alva, Okla. for another important conference doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
