EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 17, 2007) - Oklahoma Christian fell 67-58 to NCAA Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State on night two of the Sleep Inn Classic on Saturday. The loss dropped OC to 3-3 on the year.
The Eagles have one day to regroup before taking on another D-II opponent in crosstown rival Central Oklahoma on Monday. The Eagles and Bronchos will tip at 7 p.m. at UCO's Hamilton Field House.
OC took an early 2-0 lead against SOSU on Saturday when Jason Taylor laid home a basket. The Savage Storm answered with a 9-0 run and never trailed again.
The Eagles drew the lead back to 9-7 when Taylor again scored, but SOSU responded with another scoring rant, this time rattling off an 11-2 charge.
SOSU took a 28-20 lead to intermission.
OC refused to let SOSU build the lead to any larger than 11 in the second half. Trailing 50-39 at the 8:28 mark, OC's Sam Stephens scored on a putback to ignite a 14-3 Eagle run.
OC nipped the lead to five at 53-48 when David Jackson connected on three and then narrowed the gap further to 53-51 when Jeff Crocker dropped a long-range triple.
Crocker's three would be the Eagles' last points over the next 3:54 as SOSU built the lead back to eight. The Savage Storm connected on 8-of-8 free throws in the final 34 seconds to offset seven Eagles' points in the same time span.
"We played a good game, but just couldn't get things going until late in the second half," OC head coach Dan Hays said.
Taylor led OC with 16 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Tefft, a night after scoring a career-high 24 points, added 12 points and six rebounds. Crocker had 13 points and two steals. SOSU's Darrien Williams netted a game-high 25 points.
The Eagles finish the Sleep Inn Classic at 1-1 after last night's 76-65 win over Texas College.
"We made some progress, but we need to win these home games. This team is facing some adversity so we need our student body and fans to rally around us," Hays said.
