OC cagers open SAC play with wins

The OC men's and women's basketball teams opened their 2006 Sooner Athletic Conference campaign by sweeping visiting Northwestern Oklahoma State here Jan. 5.

In the women's contest, the Lady Eagles overcame early turnovers and a slow start from the field to rout the visiting Lady Rangers 77-45.

Katie Fariss and Carlissa Plowden led the team in scoring with 22 points apiece. Fariss converted on six of her eight three-point attempts while also snatching six rebounds.

Plowden made eight of her 11 field goal attempts and also grabbed six caroms. Junior Rachel Martin was just a rebound shy of a double-double as she scored 12 points and collected nine rebounds.

The victory runs the Lady Eagles' record to 8-4 and 1-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The 16th-ranked Lady Eagles will play at fifth- ranked Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday.

In men's action, the Eagles used timely scoring down the stretch to overcome the Rangers 68-55.

Junior Charles Baldwin connected on a three-point basket with 6:08 remaining to give the Eagles a 54-41 lead and they never looked back.

Baldwin led all scorers with 18 points, connecting on four of his five three-point attempts.

Senior Dillon Ripley added 13 points while Brady Page scored 11 points and dished out eight assists. Micah Miles also added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The fourth-ranked Eagles' record is now 11-1 as they shift their focus to a top-10 showdown with conference rival and eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist Saturday in Shawnee.

The women's game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
