OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 17, 2009) – The Oklahoma Christian men's soccer team upset No. 12 Oklahoma City University in a 2-1 victory with the women tying OCU 0-0 on Saturday night.
The Lady Eagles met the Oklahoma City Stars head on in a back and forth match with stubborn defenses. The OC women's defensive squad held the Lady Stars to only four shots on goal through regular time and two overtime periods.
The Lady Eagles also saw a tough defense in OCU as they were unable to score throughout the game's entirety and only made several shots on goal themselves.
Through a long fought match, the teams finished with a 0-0 tie leaving the OC women 8-3-2 on the season.
The OC men began the game with a fierce notion to score making several shots right off the bat. Early in the half, Craig Turbyfill took an assist from Neil Hilton and put the ball into the Star's net giving the Eagles an early lead.
A little more than midway through the first half, OCU made a foul in their box to allow for an OC penalty kick. Cristian Fernandes took the shot and put it past the keeper to put the Eagles up 2-0 over the Stars at half.
The remainder of the first half saw several more attempts at goal, yet both teams were unsuccessful.
At the start of the second half, OCU's Alex Gang found the OC net to give the Stars their first goal of the game and making the score 2-1. Following Gang's goal, both teams fought hard to the end of the game with no more scores during regulation time. "This was our most complete performance so far this season," said head coach David Scott. "We took our chances well in attack and we defended well as a team to limit their opportunities."
The final score tallying 2-1 gives the Eagles their eighth win and a 8-2-1 overall record for the season. "OCU has a very good team and we knew it was going to be a tough game," said Scott. "Our guys came out ready to play and were able to get a lead in the first half. They [OCU] got an early goal in the second half, but we showed a lot of heart in response to the pressure and held on to get a great result."
The OC soccer teams return home to host Southern Nazarene University on Tuesday in a women's and men's double header with the women's game beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's at 8:00 p.m.
