ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (Mar. 13, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian softball picked up three wins on Sunday at the 2011 Gulf Coast Invitational including a 3-0 victory over No. 10 Shorter University (Ga.) for the bracket title.
Game 1
The Lady Eagles took on Campbellsville University (Ken.) for their first game on Sunday.
Campbellsville took the lead first with a single score in the first inning to lead 1-0 heading into the second.
Two scoreless innings followed before the Lady Eagles got on the board with a run of their own in the fourth. Taylor Renshaw made it home from third base when Lauren Walk singled through the hole at shortstop.
Three more scoreless innings followed to take the game into extra innings with a 1-1 tie. In the top of the eighth, the Lady Eagles put a run on the board when Jade Tallbull scored on an error to take the game 2-1.
Sarah Peoples and Michelle Miller led OC at the plate with both recording 2-for-4 success. Leigh Leonard earned the win pitching the entire game and earning five strikeouts.
Game 2
OC had little problem with Thomas University for their second game on Sunday. The Lady Eagles put up three runs right of the bat in the first inning to lead 3-1 after a single run response from the TU women in the bottom of the inning.
Peoples scored first on a single from Davee Croy before Croy followed home next on a single from Kayla Jennings. Renshaw score the final run of the inning on a single from Tallbull.
In the third, the Lady Eagles grabbed three more runs. Both Renshaw and Tallbull scored on a single from Michelle Miller and a ground out from Peoples sent Miller in three batters later.
Heading into the fourth, the Lady Eagles led 6-1 and added a single run in both the fourth and sixth innings to make it an 8-1 OC victory. In the fourth, Kayla Jennings blasted a home run and in the sixth Deidre Chatigny scored from a Tallbull single.
Tallbull led at the plate with perfect 3-for-3 hitting while Chatigny contributed with 3-for-4 success. Miller went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Jennings tallied two RBI on 2-for-3 hitting.
Kimberly Cusher tallied the win after pitching the complete game and throwing five strikeouts in the process.
Game 3
The Lady Eagles played Shorter University for the bracket championship on Sunday night. Despite being outhit by the Shorter women, OC recorded a 3-0 shutout victory.
In the first inning, Croy hit a homer to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0 heading into the second.
After a scoreless second, the Lady Eagles put up another run in the third when Jennings blasted another home run to put OC up by two.
Following another runless inning, the Lady Eagles scored a final run in the fifth when Chatigny bunted to get Peoples home for the score. With no further runs to come, the Lady Eagles took the 3-0 win for the bracket championship.
Jennings hit a perfect 2-for-2 while Ashley Paxton took the win from the circle with a complete game and seven strikeouts.
Following the three consecutive victories, the OC softball team now holds an 18-7 overall record. The Lady Eagles will return home for their next matchup as they host Ottawa University (Kan.) on Friday in a double header scheduled for 2 p.m.
