WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Nine sets is all it took for Oklahoma Christian to reach three wins as the Eagles swept through the Midwestern State Invitational with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 victory over William Jewell Saturday afternoon.
Katy Geurin dominated the three-setter, averaging 4.33 kills per set for a match-high 13 kills while hitting .455. True freshman
Kenzy McArtor had her most kills of her young collegiate career with five winners.
Sophie Mae Smith was the main distributor on the afternoon with 25 assists while while
Summer van Meerveld followed with 15.
Oklahoma Christian scored the first four points of the match before William Jewell immediately closed the gap to one, 5-4. The Eagles' lead remained within two over next 10 minutes of game action until WJC cut it one, 17-16, on an OC attack error, forcing a maroon-and-gray timeout. The move from coach Freeman proved useful as OC scored eight of the final 11 to take the opening frame, 25-19.
The maroon-and-gray did not allow the second set to remain as close for the bulk of the frame, hitting .289 compared to .229 in the first, building to as much as an eight-point, 19-11 lead. With OC sporting match point, the Cardinals mounted a 4-0 spurt before a kill from Jones closed the door on the penultimate stanza, 25-20.
William Jewell saw the early momentum, opening a 9-5 lead after scoring the first three points of the third set. With an 11-9 advantage for the Cardinals, Oklahoma Christian doubled up WJC the rest of the way, outscoring them 16-8 down the stretch for the 25-19 victory.
Oklahoma Christian (3-0, 0-0) will head out west to Arcata, Calif. next weekend for the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic before returning to the Sooner State for its home opener Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. against Texas Permain Basin as part of the LSC Challenge.
