Record-Tying 12 Aces Propel Eagles Over Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. - Oklahoma Christian opened the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic with a 3-1 win over tournament-host Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday evening.

The Eagles (4-0, 0-0 LSC) used 12 service aces in the effort - tying the most aces in a non-conference match and the second most aces in program history.

Leading the way in the record-tying stat was Lauren Cary and Macey Nehring with three aces a piece. Summer van Meerveld and Sara Freeman, who led the team in aces in 2024 with 38, both had a pair while Payton Cash and newly added member to the 1000-assist club Sophie Mae Smith each picked up a winner from the end line.

Four Eagles accumulated double-digit kills, with Annie Davis leading the way with 14 while hitting .300 - her seventh best attacking percentage on at least 14 kills of the senior's career. Chloe Jones followed Davis with 13 kills while picking up 16 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Oklahoma Christian's first three points came from its three-heading offensive monster in Davis, Jones and Katy Geurin as the trio dominated the first set for OC. The Eagles hit a match-high .282 in the opening frame for the early 25-19 nod.

Cal Poly Humboldt overcame a 19-16 deficit deep into set two as the Oklahoma Christian allowed its first set of the 2025 season, 25-23. Four service aces in set three stood to be the difference in the stanza as OC retook the lead in the match with the 25-21 third-set victory.

After Davis secured the first two points on the fourth set, Jones and company took her cue as the Eagles saw their most lopsided victory of the evening, 25-16. In addition to hitting .242, OC's defense held the Lumberjacks to their worst hitting set of the match at .143.
