WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Oklahoma Christian held both of its Friday opponents below a 0.75 attack percentage, including sub-zero for Newman in match two, as six sets is all OC needed to close opening day undefeated.
Annie Davis led the squad against Southeastern Oklahoma State with 11 kills as OC swept SE in the first match of 2025. As a team, the maroon-and-gray hit .571 in the first set before completing the sweep.
Katy Geurin filled Davis' shoes in match two as her seven-kill, four-dig outing lifted the Eagles to their second sweep of the day.
Oklahoma Christian (2-0, 0-0) will face William Jewell in the Eagles' final match of the Midwestern State Invitational Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
Match One: Oklahoma Christian 3, Southeastern Oklahoma State 0
Davis put on a hitting clinic in the first set of 2025, delivering seven kills while hitting .778. 10 of OC's 17 first-set kills came from Davis and
Chloe Jones as the Eagles' offensive firepower overwhelmed the Savage Storm through the early going to the tune of 25-13.
Southeastern kept it close in the second frame, holding the maroon-and-gray at a tie, 13-13, before a pair of block assists from Geurin and
Lauren Cary and
Camryn McGough and Davis helped spark a 4-0 run. Moments later, when SE closed the gap to 21-18, three of the set's final four points came courtesy of the right arm of Jones as the reigning LSC Co-Freshman of the Year led the Eagles to a second-set, 25-18 victory.
As they did in the second set, the Savage Storm stuck at OC's hip, even holding the lead through the early going, 10-7. As they did in the second set, however, the Eagles used a 4-0 run before carrying that lead to the finish line. Play saw one more tie at 16-16 before Oklahoma Christian officially closed the door with nine of the match's final 12 points. Graduate student
Megan Rek proved to be the main catalyst for the final run with two blocks, including a solo stuff, and two kills.
Match Two: Oklahoma Christian 25, Newman 18
Oklahoma Christian held Newman to a sub-zero hitting percentage in each of the first two sets. The Eagles came out hot, opening a 7-1 headstart before forcing NU's first called timeout of the match at 10-5. The maroon-and-gray grew that lead to an eight-point first-set victory, 25-17.
Another quick start in the second propelled OC forward from a 9-3 start to a 25-19 win. Newman saw two separate leads in the early going of the third set after only seeing one lead the entire first two stanzas. A rare 2-1 Jets lead turned into 4-2 in favor of the Eagles after three straight NU errors. Teams remained within a few points of each other before a match-sealing 7-0 OC run all but finished it as the maroon-and-gray took the 25-18 third-set victory.
