EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian held one of the nation's top three-point shooting teams to its second-worst shooting output of the young season, but the upset bid just evaded the Eagles Thursday night as No. 4 Lubbock Christian held on for the 70-67 victory.
The Eagles dominated the Chaparrals in the paint, 36-24, as well as in points off turnovers, 17-7, but LCU saw the slight overall shooting edge, 48.1 percent (25-of-52) to 43.5 percent (27-of-62). The Chaps were held to just 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from three-point range while OC managed five triples on 19 attempts for a 26.3 clip.
Jason Clark led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) shooting.
Miles Gibson recorded his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Anthony Ignowski saw his season-high in The Nest with nine points while also adding three assists and three rebounds.
Oklahoma Christian came out fast, holding a double-digit lead over the nation's number four team nine and a half minutes into play in what was LCU's first double-digit deficit of the season. The next eight and half minutes would see just one more OC field goal, unfortunately, as LCU took advantage of the scoring lull by taking a two-point lead into the locker room, 30-28.
The Chaparrals built that lead to 13 with 9:46 remaining in regulation before the Eagles began to claw their way back. A 12-4 maroon-and-gray run got the lead down to five before the final media timeout. A 1-for-2 trip to the free-throw line from
Carson Jones brought the tally to 66-64 with 35 seconds left, but LCU made its final four free-throws to stave off the Eagles, 70-67.
Oklahoma Christian (4-4, 0-3 LSC) will return to the Payne Athletic Center Saturday, Dec. 13 when Midwestern State tips off with the Eagles at 3 p.m.
