PITTSBURG, Kan. - Opening day for the Oklahoma Christian women's volleyball program proved fruitful as the Eagles and first-year head coach
Asa Freeman picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the Gorilla Classic, defeating Western Colorado and Pittsburg State, 3-2 and 3-0, respectively.
Since the program's reinstatement in 2020, this is just the second time OC has opened a season 2-0. True freshman
Chloe Jones showed to be a big reason for the successful opening day, logging 24 kills and 25 digs in her pair of debut collegiate matches.
As a team, Oklahoma Christian hit .229 across the eight sets, delivering 98 kills to just 33 errors. Junior outside hitter
Katy Geurin had the highest attack percentage among players with at least 50 total attacks on the day, hitting .375 for 18 kills.
Oklahoma Christian (2-0, 0-0) will return to John Lance Arena Saturday, Sept. 7 for another two-match day beginning with Southwest Baptist at 11:30. The Eagles will finish off the four-match weekend with Arkansas Tech at 4:30 p.m.
MATCH ONE: Oklahoma Christian 3, Western Colorado 2
Senior transfer
Riley Daugherty delivered a double-double in her first match as an Eagle with 10 kills and 16 digs while the aforementioned Geurin matched Daugherty's 10 winners to lead the offensive attack. Jones filled up the stat sheet with 22 digs, eight kills and five block assists.
Western Colorado won the first set, 25-20, before the two sides alternated set-wins until the match stood at a tie, 2-2. After dropping the third set, 25-15, OC played its best set up to that point, hitting .353 with 14 kills to just two errors to force a winner-take-all set.

The fifth set went the Mountaineers' way early on as WC raced out to a 5-2 lead before growing the advantage to 8-4. Back-to-back kills from Daugherty fueled what would become an 11-5 run that delivered the Eagles their first win of the 2024 season, 15-13. Three of Daugherty's match-high 10 kills came in OC's final 11 points.
MATCH TWO: Oklahoma Christian 3, Pittsburg State 0
The Eagle defense was on full display in the first set against tournament-host Pittsburg State, holding the Gorillas to a sub-zero attack percentage as OC used the momentum from the five-set thriller to post a 25-20 victory in the first set.
Both Oklahoma Christian's offense and defense synced up in the second set as OC hit .423 while stymieing the PSU offense yet again to the tune of a .000 attack percentage. The Eagles scored 20 of the first 24 points in the second stanza to stand within one set of the sweep, 25-12.
Another fast start saw OC open a 10-3 advantage before trading points with the Gorillas for the 25-20 third-set victory. Friday night was OC's first sweep of a non-conference opponent since Sept. 9, 2023.
