Riley Daugherty reached 1000 career digs as the Eagles completed a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Gorilla Classic with a 3-0 and 3-2 win over Southwest Baptist and Arkansas Tech, respectively.
Daugherty, who also currently has 923 career kills, spent her first two seasons at Newman before moving to Colorado Mesa as a junior and winding up in Edmond, Okla. in 2024. The Wichita, Kan., native was named to the Gorilla Classic All-Tournament Team, along with Tournament MVP true freshman
Chloe Jones and junior outside
Katy Geurin.
The most recent addition to the 1000-dig club finished her inaugural Eagle weekend with 46 kills and 66 digs while Jones led the OC offense with 57 kills (3.56 kills per set) and 45 digs. Both Daugherty and Jones averaged a double-double for the season-opening tournament.
Oklahoma Christian (4-0, 0-0) will return to the Payne Athletics Center for a week of practice before leaving for Kearney, Neb., for the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic hosted by Nebraska-Kearney Sept. 13-14.
MATCH ONE: Oklahoma Christian 3, Southwest Baptist 0
A near-flawless first set saw OC record 14 kills and zero errors for a .519 attack percentage. After holding a slim 14-9 lead, the Eagles exploded for 11 of the final 14 points of the frame to take the opening stanza, 25-12.
Oklahoma Christian's defense was the story in the second set, holding Southwest Baptist to .000 attack percentage thanks to three combined blocks from the Eagles. An early 6-3 deficit quickly gave way to a 9-1 OC run to give the eventual second-set nod to Oklahoma Christian, 25-14.
A match-high 19 kills from the Eagles in the third set, including four and three kills from All-Tournament representatives Jones and Daugherty, respectively, gave Oklahoma Christian its second sweep of the weekend.
MATCH TWO: Oklahoma Christian 3, Arkansas Tech 2
For the second time in two days, OC pulled out a five-set thriller. Following a dominant 25-13 first-set victory, ATU picked up two of the next three sets to force a winner-take-all fifth set.
During the final stanza, Daugherty, who came into the fifth set one dig shy of the 1000 threshold, helped the Eagles overcome an early fifth-set deficit. Trailing 5-1, Daugherty and the Eagles fought back with a five-run spurt to take over at 6-5, during which Daugherty claimed her 1000th dig.
Both sides traded points for the rest of the way before, with the score tied at 16-16, the weekend's usual suspects Jones and Daugherty sent home back-to-back winners to complete the perfect 2024 opening weekend.
