Asa Freeman is in his first full year as the head volleyball coach at Oklahoma Christian for the 2024 season after serving in an interim role during the 2023 campaign. Freeman, who has served as an assistant volleyball coach at OC since August 2021, held an 8-10 record during his stint as interim head coach, earning his first win as acting head coach against Eastern New Mexico Sept. 22, 2023.
During his first official year as head coach, Freeman led the Oklahoma Christian volleyball program to its first 20-win season as an NCAA Division II member while also posting its most Lone Star Conference wins in school history (9), reaching the eight-team LSC Tournament as the seven seed.
In his inaugural season at the helm, Freeman coached the program's first ever Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference recipient Chloe Jones after a program-record 368-kill season. Â
Freeman began his coaching career in 2010 as a student assistant at Central Oklahoma for two seasons, during which the Bronchos went a combined 39-25. Also in 2010, Freeman coached the Kaizen Volleyball Club and guided the club team to the national championship in 2017 following three consecutive runner-up finishes in 2014, '15 and '16. Freeman now sits on the club's executive board as the vice president.
In 2014, Freeman was a co-founder of the Southwest Boys Tour while coaching at Casady School in Oklahoma City from 2012-16, posting a 102-33 record and winning the Southwest Preparatory Conference title in 2016.
Freeman later worked in Dallas for the North Texas Region of USA Volleyball, overseeing adult and beach programs and founding a boys high-performance program. He also worked at the Excel Volleyball Club in Dallas and coached at St. Mark's School, where he won the SPC title in 2018 and was that league's runner-up in 2019.
During his time in Dallas, Freeman co-founded the Texoma High Performance Program, which took top athletes in Oklahoma and Texas to compete at the USA High Performance Championships from 2016-2018. He went on to work for one of the top clubs in the country, Austin Junior Volleyball, as the boys volleyball coordinator from 2017 to 2018 and coached for St. Stephen's Episcopal School.
In 1998, Freeman played for the Kaizen Volleyball Club as Oklahoma's first boys volleyball club, for which he played until 2010 when he began coaching the club. In 2009, Freeman was a part of the USA Youth National Training Team.
Coach Freeman lives in Edmond, Okla., with his wife Suzie and their son and daughter, Garrison and Collins.
