EDMOND, Okla. - Three-time Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Week
Chloe Jones averaged five kills per set, totaling 15 kills as Oklahoma Christian swept Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night, 3-0.
The Eagles have now swept three conference opponents this season in route to its sixth LSC win, tied for their second most league wins since joining the Lone Star in 2020.
The aforementioned Jones hit .464 with her team-high 15 kills as the Waukee, Iowa, native is three kills shy of 300 winners on the season. The freshman phenom would be just the second Eagle to ever reach the 300-kill threshold for a single season in the NCAA Division II era and the first ever freshman.
Lauren Cary led OC with a .643 attack percentage, logging nine kills for second most on the team and five total blocks.
Sophie Mae Smith (21) and
Lauren McClure (18) combined for 39 of Oklahoma Christian's 45 assists.
Early on in the first set, it was all Eagles, opening a 4-1 lead. The tables quickly turned, however, as ENMU fought all the way back and then some to take an 18-14 lead as the Greyhounds looked to pull the opening-set upset.
Thanks to the best player on the court Wednesday night, OC flipped a gear that would last the rest of the match. After closing the opening set on an 11-2 run on the back of four Jones kills, Oklahoma Christian took the early match lead, 25-20.
The momentum of the late run remained as the Eagles slowly built their lead in the second frame before eventually coming within one set of the match, 25-18. The third set looked to be much of the same after an 8-2 Oklahoma Christian lead, but the Greyhounds echoed their first-set magic by taking a 22-20 lead.
As it did in the opening stanza, OC responded in turn, this time with the help of Cary and true freshman
Claire Duley, combining for four of the match's final six points as the Eagles completed the sweep, 25-23.
Oklahoma Christian, after going 7-1 during this eight-match home stand, will play a road match for the first time since Saturday, Oct. 12 when it battles Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
