EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian volleyball posted its fifth consecutive victory on the season with a 3-0 sweep over East Central Tuesday night. The Tigers came into the night as the third ranked team in the Great American Conference with non-conference wins over UT Tyler and (RV) Dallas Baptist.
The Eagles (14-7, 4-4 LSC) hit .304, which was their highest team hitting percentage since Sept. 7. Oklahoma Christian has now hit .200 or better in six consecutive matches. On the season, OC is hitting .213 as a team, which is currently 11th in the Lone Star Conference.
Annie Davis was the only Eagle to log double-digit kills with 12, marking her fourth straight such match, while hitting .292.
Sophie Mae Smith averaged seven assists per set for a total of 21 while also delivering five service aces.
Both teams hit north of .300 in the opening set, but OC edged ECU with a .361 hitting percentage compared to the Tigers' .324. That advantage in the attack average was reflected in the score as the Eagles took the early match lead, 25-23.
After a back-and-forth first set, Oklahoma Christian dominated for the final two frames. After building an 18-12 lead, ECU closed the deficit to two, 18-16, before the Eagles closed on a 7-3 run to take the second set, 25-19.
Both teams split the first two points of the what would end up being the final set, but the home team secured 16 of the match's next 19 points to establish OC's biggest lead of the night at 17-4 lead. After head coach
Asa Freeman put in the subs, the Eagles completed the sweep with a third-set25-17 victory.
Oklahoma Christian will resume conference action Friday, Oct. 25 when Texas Woman's comes to the Payne Athletic Center for a 6 p.m. first serve. Less than 24 hours later, Midwestern State will come to the Sooner State Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
