EDMOND, Okla - Less than 24 hours removed from overcoming a 2-1 set deficit, Oklahoma Christian volleyball bested that with a five-set victory after trailing two sets to none against Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon.
After a 2-0 weekend, the Eagles are 4-4 through their first eight conference matches for just the second time since the program's reinstatement in 2020.
Annie Davis led the OC offense for the second straight match with 16 kills, followed by
Chloe Jones and
Avery Cole with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Jones also matched her season-high with 25 digs while
Lauren McClure delivered a season-high 32 assists.
Lauren Cary proved to give Oklahoma Christina the extra boost it needed as the sophomore transfer tallied a season-high six service aces. Cary's half-dozen aces is the most single-game aces since
Giorgia Turri recorded six against Purdue Northwest Sept. 2, 2023.
Both teams hit .163 in the opening set as the teams were dead even before TAMIU took the marathon first frame, 29-27. A .333 second set from the Dustdevils allowed for a 2-0 lead in the match.
With Oklahoma Christian staring a sweep in the face, the Eagles offense came alive, hitting no worse than .200 over the final three sets. After an early 5-2 lead, OC fought back to keep the score within two points until TAMIU stood two points away from completing the sweep, 23-22.
Sophie Mae Smith and Jones combined for back-to-back kills before a Dustdevil attack error gave the home team its first set-win of the day and the momentum the Eagles would need.
Two of Cary's game-high six aces came in the first four points of the fourth frame as OC continued the momentum with the fourth frame's first four points. The Eagles continued on with their best offensive set of the day up to that point, hitting .275 in route to a 25-22 victory and to even the overall match, 2-2.
Oklahoma Christian saved its best for last, recorded 10 kills compared to just one error across the final 15 points.
Camryn McGough handed OC two of its first three points as part of her eight-kill, five-block performance. With the Eagles holding the slight 10-9 lead, a 5-2 run completed the three-set comeback.
Oklahoma Christian will take another step away from conference play to welcome East Central to the Payne Athletic Center Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
