Eagles Claw Back from Late Deficit to Win Third Straight

AUSTIN, Texas - Oklahoma Christian (8-8, 5-5), on the heels of two wins last week in the Nest, took its two-game winning streak to the hilltop of St. Edward's (12-6, 5-4) and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Hilltoppers in the process with a comeback win on Thursday night.

First Half
The Hilltoppers took an 11-point lead early at 14-3 before the first media timeout of the game, burying three threes and knocking down a trio of free throws.

OC responded with an 18-4 run, taking a 21-18 lead with 10:55 remaining in the first half. Karlyn Kenner, who was one of three Eagles to score nine points in the half, scored all nine of his points of the half during the run to lead the Eagles back.

St. Edward's punched back, taking a 5-point lead at 27-22, but OC had yet another first-half run in them and went into the half tied at 36 after a Hunter Staten layup.

Staten, Kenner, and Quinton Johnson II were the three Eagles to score 9 points in the half, leading a balanced attack.

Second Half
SEU came out hot in the second half, and after a Johnson II three cut the lead to 48-46, the Hilltoppers took control, taking a 71-61 lead with 7 minutes remaining.

The Eagles didn't back down, and after already erasing an 11-point SEU lead in the first half, clawed back over the final seven minutes and took their first lead of the half on a Moun'Tae Edmundson four-point play with 2:18 left in the game.

Back-and-forth buckets led to a Hilltoppers lead, but with 38 seconds left, Nickolas Traylor scooped up a loose ball and went coast-to-coast for the layup to give the Eagles an 81-80 lead.

Edmundson, Staten, and Traylor sealed the win for the Eagles at the free-throw line, giving the Eagles an 85-80 win, the first in Austin since 2013.

Notes
  • Johnson led the Eagles with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and a block.
  • Traylor and Staten each scored 13 points, Traylor added two steals, and Staten added 2 assists.
  • Moun'Tae Edmundson put up 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists to make it four Eagles in double figures on the night.
  • Karlyn Kenner exited the game in the first half but was clutch with 9 points on 3-4 shooting and pulled down 3 boards.
