ROLLA, Mo. (April 10, 2022) – Step one of the 2022 postseason mostly went without a hitch for Oklahoma Christian's club Ultimate team, with the Eagles taking the Ozarks Conference tournament title with a pair of wins on Sunday.
The No. 1-ranked Eagles – the reigning USA Ultimate Division III national champions – downed Truman State (Mo.) 11-5 before beating John Brown (Ark.) 12-6 in the title match on Sunday. OC will advance to the South Central Regional, to be played April 30 and May 1 in Commerce City, Colo.
The regional champion will earn an automatic berth to the national Division III event in Milwaukee in May. In this unusual 2021-22 academic year, OC will have a chance to win two national titles – the one for 2021 (which the Eagles took in December) and the one in 2022.
Against Truman State – the No. 4 seed in the four-team conference tournament – OC jumped to a 3-0 lead, then led 7-3 at halftime after a D from
Samuel Roberts and a scoring pass from Thomas Maguire to
David Peterson. The second half proved to be more of the same, with Truman State rarely challenging the Eagles.
John Brown upset tournament host Missouri S&T 9-8 in the other semifinal and JBU's IronFirst started quickly in the title match, taking a 3-1 lead over OC. But a 6-2 scoring run by the Eagles put them up 7-5 at halftime and JBU never recovered, as OC pulled away for the 12-6 win.
In OC's five matches during the tournament, the Eagles didn't allow any opponent more than six scores.
