OKLAHOMA CITY (March 27, 2022) – After what coach
Shalee Rodriguez deemed a subpar performance in a nonconference softball game on Thursday against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) – in which No. 23-ranked Oklahoma Christian barely escaped with a 9-7 win – OC pitchers have gone into lockdown mode.
Texas Woman's bore the brunt of the Eagles' renewed focus on Sunday afternoon, with junior
Kali Crandall and freshman
Grace Anderson each throwing a complete-game one-hitter as OC rolled past the Pioneers 6-1 and 5-1 on a sunny day at Tom Heath Field.
Those performances came after Crandall and
Lindsey Stoeckel combined to allow only six hits in a doubleheader sweep of Lone Star Conference for Midwestern State (Texas) on Friday. OC (24-8, 12-4 LSC) is the conference's hottest team, having won 10 straight games to move into a four-way tie for third place in the uber-competitive league, two games behind the leader, Texas A&M-Commerce.
With the latest stretch of outstanding pitching, OC has lowered its team ERA to 2.13, second-best in the LSC.
In the opener,
Kylie Janzen and Stoeckel each drew a bases-loaded walk off Texas Woman's starter Kelsie Briggs (4-7) in the bottom of the first inning and that was all Crandall (11-6) needed. The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it 4-0.
Crandall carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and recorded one out before Paige Tamayo homered over the left-field fence. Crandall recovered, though, and blanked the Pioneers (9-18, 4-12) the rest of the way. She finished with six strikeouts.
Anderson (8-2) gave up her lone hit in the second inning of the second game, a RBI single by Alexys Ginegaw. But Anderson eventually finished with nine strikeouts and retired the Pioneers' final 14 batters.
OC scored three runs in the first inning off Texas Woman's starter Jules Malis (4-9), with
Brooklin Bain leading off with a triple and
Rian Gamble and
Whitney Walde following with doubles ahead of a run-scoring single by
Aaliyah Brown. Brown's double to left-center keyed a two-run third inning for the Eagles.
The Eagles will be on the LSC road next weekend, visiting Eastern New Mexico on Friday and defending NCAA Division II champion West Texas A&M on Sunday.
